How to: Self Officiate your DC Elopement

Eloping is all about celebrating your love in an intimate and meaningful way, and Washington, DC offers endless opportunities to make it truly unforgettable. Did you know that you can even self-officiate your wedding in DC? That means no officiant, no fuss—just the two of you (and maybe a few guests) tying the knot your way. Here’s your ultimate guide to self-officiating and choosing a stunning location for your DC elopement.

What is Self Officiating?

Self-officiating, also known as a "self-solemnizing" ceremony, means you and your partner can marry each other without needing an officiant to lead the ceremony. In Washington, DC, this is completely legal and incredibly straightforward. It’s perfect for couples looking for a personal, low-key, and unique way to say "I do."

How to Self-Officiate in DC: The Basics

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Obtain a Marriage License: Head to the DC Superior Court Marriage Bureau to apply for your marriage license. The best part? There’s no waiting period in DC, so you can receive your license the same day you apply.
  • Documents Needed:
  • Valid government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license or passport).
  • A filled-out application form, available on the court’s website.
  • Cost: $45 (includes a $35 license fee and a $10 certificate fee).

Pro Tip: Apply online in advance to save time.

  1. Choose "No Officiant" on the Application: When filling out your application, indicate that you’re officiating your own wedding. Both partners will sign as officiants on the marriage certificate after the ceremony.
  2. Celebrate Your Ceremony: Once you have your license, the city is your oyster! Choose a location, exchange vows, and sign your marriage certificate.
  3. File Your Marriage Certificate: Return the signed certificate to the DC Marriage Bureau within 10 days. They’ll record your marriage and provide an official copy upon request.
